Rob,
I did the 16V conversion into my 78 MK1 using the original internal harness 
and just added the 16V motor harness. I think I had to splice in 6 wires 
total. I also converted my dash over to 16V as well and just changed 
positions on the switch and add the newer style cluster pigtails spliced in 
as well.
