high pitch squealing noise

ok, my 88 16v has been making this high pitch squealing noise ever since i redid my non-a/c conversion. I know that the noise is coming from somewhere on the timing belt routing. I think it may have something to do with that little metal shield between the timing belt and the block. Anybody have any other ideas where it may be coming from? Can get rid of this little metal shield or is it vital.

Also, i think the threadings in the crank gear for the pulleys to mount to are getting !@#$ed up. Is it a pain in the ass to change the crank gear?

TIA
