close-ratio tranny

OK, I have yet another tranny question. I am still trying to decide whether 
to fix my FF tranny or get a close-ratio. This is going in a mk1. Anyway, 
which trannies were the 'self-machining' ones. Is the 4k from an 83 GTI ok?
