tire question

Quick question: The Dunlop D-40s on my Jetta have developed cracks on the
sidewalls and in between the tread.  I'm assuming this isn't good, but
I've honestly never had tires for more than just a few years (they either
wear out, or more likely get upgraded) so I don't know if this is normal
or not.  They are almost 4 years old.

I assume they need replacing, but I'd like to know if this is a problem
before I buy new tires.
