Get a meter on the battery. When the car stops putting out voltage, this
is exactly the symptoms of a battery meeting death. 

What happens is, the battery stops taking a charge. So the car thinks,
hmm, you need more voltage, ok, ill up the rpm's and get you a little
more juice. As the battery creates a larger amp draw, the rest of the
electrical system starts to suffer from low voltage. Temp gauges, fuel
gauge will react like there is a problem when there is none. 

The really funny thing is, the battery light never comes on because it
thinks its getting 13.5 and up voltage which is actually voltage from the
alternator and not battery voltage.  
Check it yo.
