Kevin, Is the car in gear when this happens? I suspect it is, and if so,
your problem is certainly in the clutch. For some reason or another it's
just not disengaging. I've had a spring break on the clutch and lodge itself
behind the PP, similar problem, but continuous. (BTW, the owner's manual
says to start the car in neutral, w/clutch depressed)

If your car is in neutral, then you might have a combination of issues. If
something is causing shifting issues inside the tranny, then it could still
be "in gear" even when you think it's out, and make it hard to shift.

But you've definitely got a sticking clutch. Even if the tranny had fused
itself together into a solid lump of steel, you would be able to start the
car just fine with the clutch disengaged.
