Spax is a british company and yes they are the actual manufacturer.

A bunch of guys on the GTI VR6 list had some of their stuff a couple of years
ago when I was still there, and had LOTS of problem with leaky shocks.  Don't
recall any complaints about the springs.. but QC on the shocks was horrendous.
