This sounds vaguely familiar.  Didn't other listers have similar issues that
were diagnosed as a clogged cat?  Where after running for awhile the clog
creates too much backpressure and kills the engine.  Since it doesn't seem
to be related to the lights, maybe this could be your issue?  Take this for
what it's worth from a non-MkI, never had a cat issue 16v owner.
