RE: 87 16v cold start problems...

Sounds very familiar.  Problem could be a bad ground.  Someone on this board
a couple of years ago gave me this idea.  Add another ground wire from the
negative post on your battery to your coil, which is mounted behind the
engine, center, on the body.  Basically between the wipers under the hood.
I connected the wire to the bracket that is holding the coil.

Good test is to use one side of some jumper cables, to do the same thing.
For example, attach one of the black clamps to the negative post on the
battery, and attach the other black clamp to the engine block, or to the
bracket on the coil.

Yep, and I have something like 20 emails from other people who have cured 
it by doing the same. :)
