RE: 16v smoking questions: etc

I am having heat problems. I just changed the fan thermo switch to a low
temp unit. I took out a 90-95 deg.
I also have oil on the passenger side of the engine. It is getting on the
timing belt and the lower cover. Where could this be coming from?

Black smoke is fuel problems, blue smoke is oil burning in the combustion
chamber (either valve guides, seals, or rings) and greyish white smoke is
coolant (head gasket). Compression check and leak down check will tell you
alot. Plus, when you pull the plugs, make sure to look into the cylinder.
You will see probably one of these three: 1. black plugs and a lot of
carbon build up 2. wet with oil, or 3. clean pistions with coolant in the
cylinder. If you suspect a head gasket problem (coolant leaking into the
combustion chambers) there are testers that you can buy to check for a bad
headgasket. It is called a Block Tester and looks like a huge syringe with
a rubber coned shape piece on the bottom. You set it on the overflow bottle
where the cap goes, then add a chemical that reacts to exhaust gases. If
you have a bad head gasket, the solution will turn colors as it reacts to
the exhaust gases that usually are not suppose to be in the cooling system.
Any overheating or hot problems? HTH!!
