Tie rod replacement suggestions

Hello all,

Well I have to replace the drivers side tie rod on my '87 16v rocco.  I've
read through the Bentley, it doesn't sound like to much fun.  But I thought
I would just see if anyone has any helpful tips or suggestions on this
procedure.

There is one thing that struck me as kind of odd with the new tie rod.  I
purchased it from "Parts Place Inc."  Well it looks fine except that on the
outer stud there is no hole for the cotter pin, yet there was a new cotter
pin in the box.  The nut that came with it also does not support a cotter
pin.  The nut does have one of those plastic? rings inside like were on the
self locking nuts for the master cylinder  It seems that it is made to just
use that.  The cotter pin just kind of threw me off.  I should note, however
that the cotter pin was in the package from parts place and not in the
manufacturers box that contained the tie rod itself.  Maybe they just didn't
know it didn't use a cotter pin?
