Considering what happens when the VW coolant oil cooler goes, I feel a
lot better not having one.

If you are lucky, you might be able to replace the rod/main bearings, 
but it is almost easier to drop in another engine.

You can pick up a used JH for $150-250... Or a shortblock for $100-150.

I don't know where you are located, but I have an RD shortblock, that I
would sell for $150.
Ask around, it shouldn't be too difficult to fins a good 1.8L.
