Re: Fuel injector parts

Phil,

There are two o-rings that fit over the injector itself. There is a larger
rubber o-ring (the new ones were green in my case), and a black graphite
tiny o-ring that fits around the tip of the injector. These are:

034 133 557E CIS INJECTOR SEAL
035 133 557A CIS INJECTOR GRAPHITE O-RING

As far as the inserts there is a large brass threaded fitting with an
inset 13mm socket which is the upper insert, and a lower insert which is a
brown plastic bushing that looks like sort of a top hat that is really
stretched out vertically and is missing the very top round part. Yeah.
Anyway, there is an o-ring that goes "next to" the lip of the lower
injector insert, its small and black and rubber. I don't have the part
number for it in my "part numbers" file, though. Sorry. Here's the brown
plastic insert:

035 133 554 CIS LOWER INJECTOR INSERT

You don't need to replace the upper insert unless its stripped out or
damaged in some way. The lower inserts are probably all cracked and toast
if your car has more than 100,000 miles on it. I'd replace them and
definately their o-rings. In fact, I'd replace all the o-rings. It'll
smooth out your idle if the old ones are not doing their job (very common).

You'll need the special 13mm allen wrench to get the injector inserts out
(the upper ones - the lower ones just lift out with the upper ones). I
used the back side of a special 12-point driver that I bought for my CV
joints - it was just the right size. IMHO, buying that $12 set of 12 point
drivers is the easiest and cheapest way to get the injector inserts out if
you don't have any tools that will work already. Be careful not to drop
any plastic pieces down the engine, or any metal pieces for that
matter. You'll also need a special Loctite to re-install the upper
inserts. The book specifies Loctite 620 and T-primer, but I got away with
Loctite 640 sleeve retainer. I figured it was worth a couple bucks to keep
them from potentially backing out over time and then having injectors
spray fuel all over my engine compartment and set my car on fire. Okay, so
its pretty damn unlikely - but I wanted to be on the safe side.

Lets see.. hmm.. Clean the threads of the upper inserts before you
re-install them. Mine had crusty 13 year old loctite goo on them from the
factory that crumbled off and made a mess. Oh, for installing the green
o-rings on the injectors.. get some carb cleaner (or gasoline.... carb
cleaner is basically gasoline in an aerosol can). This stuff works magic
when you're putting the o-rings on and it lets them stretch to like 30
times their size. It's like steroids for o-rings. Anyway, the combination
of spraying that stuff on them and the use of a punch (slide them on to
the punch) or a pair of pliers with smooth edges to spread the o-rings
nice and big before putting them on will make the job take 1/8th the time
as it would have if you just tried to wrestle them on with all your
might. And you won't have to go back to the parts shop and get 3 more
o-rings because you ripped the other new ones.

Good luck!
