There still may be hope...The Scirocco II GTO kits are around $2200 (US Dollars) from Tony Rieger himself (but you have to import them yourself)...so the Mk1 kits should be around the same price...I can't imagine that they would be "out of production," since all they have to do is dig up the fiberglass molds...
I know that there are a few Mk2 GTO kits running around the US, but I don't think I've ever heard of a Mk1 being done here...
