correct linkage setting:

Between shift finger & lockout plate should be 9/16", you might still have
to play with it, but that's a good place to start.

It sounds like it's just WAY out of adjustment, the way to set it is to set
the amount of clearence from underneath the car. By the rear motor mount is
the linkage adjustment (little white plastic sockets). Try your
adjustment(s) from there, starting with reverse as your guide, then first
gear.

I'll see if my dad remembers the exact clearance & reply again later with
that info.

I'm not sure about this, until recently, I never much
worked on Sciroccos, always had mechanics do the
really big stuff. Anyways, I had an old Camaro that
chewed up transmissions on a regular basis. I did a
swap once myself and reconnected the linkages wrong.
In fact, I got everything upside down. 1st became 2nd,
and 3rd became 4th. I reconnected the linkages and
everything worked out the second time.
