RE: Was: mis after rocs in the fog Now: help- headhasket/ head repair.

The head studs are designed to stretch when they are torqued down and
cannot be reused. You should purchase new ones. I got mine from
Techtonics. TT also carries ARP brand that is aircraft quality and can be
reused. Also my menchanic used a special technique and torque wrench to
apply the correct torque required. I'm glad I didn't do mine myself when I
rebuilt my engine.

if it is your head gasket, i'd say go ahead and brave it yourself...i'm
currently in the process of putting a new head gasket on my 88 16v (if
only it would stop raining here in NC :)
i don't have the most experiance or tools myself, but i figured it would
be worth doing myself to save the money and for the learning
experiance...

see if there is a lister or two you could borrow tools and help from...i
borrowed most of my tools from a friend who has a rather large
collection...

i'd say you'll probably be looking at about 200 dollars in parts for the
head gasket set, head bolts, injector o-rings, timing belt and tensioner
(might as well do them while you have them off unless they were recently
done) as well as misc. nuts and bolts you'll need to replace...i got all
my stuff from mark (adirondack) and mike (vwp)...

Go for it!

I found out today my mis isn't ignition related. the compression check
showed leakage between the 2nd and 3rd cylinders. So my choices are:
pay
this shop i'm at $80 and hr. to do the head gasket/investigate further
into
larger problems or try to brave this myself (with little in experience
and
even less in tools) or move back to pennsylvania because i'm almost
broke
out here.
If anyone knows of more reasonable shops in the bay area or would like
to
help in anyway please do, i need some transportation to work.
thanks,
