Tranny Work!!!

Well, got a couple questions here. I have the AGB trans and am doing a
clutch and various other things on my car in which I am waiting for parts.
I hadn't planned on doing the trans work until I was able to get another
trans and do a couple trick things to it while my car was still on the road.
Here are my questions:

1. How much work can you do on the diff while it is in the car? I haven't
actually done diff work (just replaced synchros before in a jetta trans) and
I have heard others on the list talk as though you can actually do some work
on the diff while the trans is in the car (the 'work' I am referring to are
bolt kits, limited slip kits, etc.)

2. Does the AGB trans have the self-machining problems that is explained
about on VL Enterprises site (the rivets not able to withstand the torque of
moded motors)?

3. If the above is a 'yes' then how much more work is it to do the bolt kit
while replacing a synchro (trans out of car)?

4. Has anyone installed a 6 speed kit?

5. Does anyone have an AGB trans in need of work with a decent case cheap
in the NW?

What my plans are are to replace the 2nd gear synchro, buy the seal/gasket
kit and replace all the seals, replace push rod (flattened on end), guide,
shifter bushings, etc. I am going to put the stock clutch in it with the
non-lightened flywheel. The rear main will be replaced (of course you have
to do that when you CRANK IS OUT!!! Little upset about that!) and the front
main. The plan is to get a cheap rebuildable trans, go through it and
install the velocity diff (quaife is too much no matter what anyone tries to
tell me about them (I know they are nice, but $1000 bucks is just a little
steep for me)), the bolt kit, the 6 speed conversion (I can justify this
since that 6th gear will be wonderful on the freeway without compromising
getting rid of the 5th gearing that I enjoy, and I know Vince personally so
I think I can get a deal on the kit) , of course all seals and gasket, and
that is about it. I plan on doing all the work myself so the labor will be
nil (in a sense). Any additions? Subtractions? Any info would be GREATLY
appreciated from people who are experienced in this area!! Thanks a TON!!!

Dave
