Ive never heard of any problems from 85 motors being bad. 

I do know of one 85 GTi that has over 260,000 miles on it. The vast
majority of them were on a road course or autox course. This motor has
been punished but keeps on running. Ticks somewhat but still manages to
turn in a fast time every event.
