caliper pistons

so i did a pad change today, and the caliper piston requires a 12mm hex...now i searched every hardware store and parts store in town and couldn't find one...the biggest i've seen is 10mm...well i managed to get the job done by grinding down the head of a 5/16 hex screw to 12 mm, and then double nutted it...i was able to use this to move the piston and provide clearance for the new pads...does anyone have a 12mm hex and know where i can get one for the next time i need to change my pads...i don't really need one asap, i was just curious about this...
