Yes drive flange seals can fail and fill the CV with trans gear oil.
Bad.
Yes you can replace all of the above mentioned items yourself in the
driveway. Give yourself the weekend, just in case. Do one side at a
time, don't do both sides (axles the same day, unless you just wail
through the really bad one and are kickin' butt.
Yes, the CV will tear itself to pieces if left the way it is & Yes the
rain makes it likely, that much sooner.

You can get CV refurb kits, everything but the CV itself, with and
without Grease included, Should come with clips for the binding up of
the CV ends to keep the grease in.

There are dished washers involved when you take the axle apart from the
CVs, I forget the spec but you should have Bentley (& Haynes too) near
by doing this so you will be OK.

I picked up some redline CV/ bearing grease from Griffin in Berkeley and
it is the bomb. Get it if you can get it easy and in time.
