freeze plugs: how to install?

Hey, I'm trying to install what I think is a freeze plug in the front of
the Warpig's engine block. How do I get this thing in there? It is a
35mm diameter disk that looks sorta like a huge bottlecap. -freeze plug,
right? Anyway, whacking it with a hammer or hammer + large socket makes
it slip around in the hole and then pop out. The tolerance obviously has
to be extremely tight so what's the patent method for installation?
