Re: 1st gear troubles (LONG)

One of the linkage bushings that seem to be overlooked, is the one on the
rack. That bushing houses the rod that runs from the shifter forward to
the piece I refer to as the 'cage'. (it has the little rubber balled
'drum stick' pivoting in it.) Grab the rod and check for play. (oh God
that really sounds X rated.) You'll see the bushing in the bracket...it
comes as an assembly on the A-1's. If it's sloppy, you'll need to replace
it...but you're not done yet.

The second thing you might try if the bushing seems to be good is to find
that rod again. You'll notice a clamp where it meets the 'cage' piece.
These two pieces are splined together so dont try to twist them apart.
Clean any debris from this area and remove the clamp. Find a bottle of
white out and mark the orientation of the rod and cage. Seperate the two
pieces and rotate the rod counter clockwise. ( as if standing at the
front of the car looking toward the rear. ) MOVE THE ROD NO MORE THAN TWO
SPLINES!

This should give you more range of motion in the shifter and allow easier
shifting into first and second. I hope this helps
