1st gear troubles

Getting in to first gear has always been tough in my car and the shift to
second gear has also been less than easy.  But Today I could not for the
life of me get in to first gear while at a dead stop unless I put it in
second gear first. What would cause this? I was planning on changing the
trans fluid but I dont think that would solve the first gear troubles?
What else could it be? oh, I changed most of the shift linkage parts
recently but I guessed I could have missed something somewhere?
