(Of course, I wouldn't recommend spraying ANYTHING on a glowing red-hot

Not necessarily.  Having bad wires, for example, will cause low-rpm 
sputters and hesitation, and the car will run fine over, say, 2500rpm.  The 
ignition system is most stressed under low-rpm, high-load driving, which 
sounds like your problem.

Not that my suggestion is a definitive answer-- but it's something I would 
check before you went any further.  Wires and vacuum leaks are easy enough 
to pin down, so I'd start by making sure they're OK before you move into 
more in-depth diagnosis.

But I can't, for the life of me, think of anything else that causes low-rpm 
hesitation... my guess is it's probably ignition-related.
