BUT, just because they weren't released in the U.S., does NOT mean that
there aren't any IN the U.S.!!  I know someone who has a TRUE Scirocco GTI.
Plus, don't forget our north and south neighbors who may have had them?!?
You can get German spec cars into the U.S., just illegal and expensive, but
possible.  I also know of someone in Portland, OR with a German spec 911
Turbo.
