Might be the water pump regulator/pulley/thingy (??) going bad.  Located on
passenger side of engine compartment.  Expensive to fix, but more expensive
if not fixed.  Usually starts out as a whirring sound...then moves to
tapping sound....then moves to grating sound....then a sudden
chhhrrrraaannkkkkzzz sound....and car stops.  Of course, all this occurs
over a period of months...but the noise gets lounder.  Hope this isn't it.
