I just installed my '88 16V coil which I know is good, along with the
distributor cap and wires from my '83 GTI and it was not the problem, it
still does it.

They are not compatible... The 8V GLi's have the off idle switch under
the throttle body and on the 16V it is on the side of it.
Since it wasn't the problem, I'm glad that I didn't buy that
switch/harness.

No, they just patched in the knock harness, I'm starting to suspect the
wiring...
