Attn MkI 16V Owners- Radiator hose question

I'm curious as to what all of you are using for your upper radiator hose.
I am using a normal, non A/C, radiator and bought a generic length of hose
which did not work,  but ended up cutting up the 16Vs original one to make
one.  The outlet from the motor and the radiator inlet are lined up, well
maybe an inch off, with each other and about 9" away from each other.  The
radiator inlet is a few inches higher than the motor inlet though.   So I'm
basically wondering if anyone else's is lined up like mine what they did;
some other VW hose or a generic straight one.  Any thoughts?
