Absolutely necessary? No.

>Just a good idea?

Absolutely. Especially if you are having cooling problems on the freeway.
Air, like water, flows to the area of least resistance. if you got a big
radiator out there and a huge hole next to it, guess where the airflow
goes??
I removed the A/C from my 82 and couldn't figure out why the car ran a
little hotter at greater than freeway speeds. I made a custom air
deflector which blocks off ALL of the passenger side of the radiator
opening where the A/C pieces were. Now cooling isn't a problem for me at,
especially on the freeway.

Yuma? Ugg. Do people actually live there since the Padre's moved their
summer home to? : )
