Another thing to bear in mind is that so long as you are using VW wheels, or
correctly fitted aftermarket rims, all the weight of the car is supported on
the hub-to-wheel flange contact. The lug bolts serve only to clamp the wheel
onto that flange and do not directly bear the weight of the vehicle, only
the side-loaded forces generated under cornering (primarily) and
acceleration/braking (torque moments). One lugnut can serve to hold the
wheel in place just fine if you limp the car around and two will allow you
to drive nearly normally although I would slow down for entrance ramps and
the like.
