As most of you know, I used to be in the "business" of selling VW parts.  I
have shipped a few trannies in my day, and $60 sounds about right (without
the flywheel, that will add some weight).  I made a small wooden base and
tied the tranny to it, then wrapped it in a couple plastic garbage bags.
Then I made a cardboard cover to zip tie to the bellhousing bolt holes and
put the address on that.
