Re: [non rocco] MG

Good ol SU's Before you tore down the carbs you did
remember to check the original settings for the
mixture screws right? This is always a good place to
start as at least the engine will run.
there are a few different ways...
1. adjust the idle to about 800-1000 rpm. I used to
use an accurate tach I had as a spare to keep check of
rpm's in the engine compartment. Start with the rear
carb and adjust the mixture back and forth until the
idle reaches it's highest point. Move to the front
carb and do the same. Afterwards, adjust your idle
back down to normal specs.

2. if you've got later model SU's (come on, it's a 30
year old MG, parts do get swaped) you can use the
vacume line attachment to hook up a vacume gauge.
Once again adjust the idle to about 800-1000 and start
on the rear carb. Adjust it till you get the highest
vacume and move to the front carb. This works on the
theory that a good mixture will cause the engine to
run better creating more vacume.

3. Stuck on a dirt road in the middle of no-where
method. Take off the air cleaner adn listen closely
the the carbs. Adjust the mixture till the light
whistle is as high pitched as possible. Once again
start on the rear carb, but be for-warned, this is a
very hit and miss method. Used mostly for cleaning
out jets on backroads in the middle of BFE with the
closest mechanic 100 miles away(don't ask)
