2.0l 8v timing

i'm near finished with a 2.0l conversion (8v ABA block, hydraulic gti head)
in my friends' cabriolet, but cant get the damn thing to start....it cranks
fine and all electrical connections appear to be correct (after several
re-checks)....i'm 99% sure it's a timing problem......i have the car at top
dead center, and set the cam gear in the correct place (lined up with the
top of the valve cover) , but when i tried to install the timing belt, i
couldn't get the belt in a tooth so that it would remain in the correct
position......do i have to reposition the belt lower down and hope that it
will then line up on the cam gear?.....i'm using a stock 2.0l 8v timing
belt.....this is the correct belt to use for the conversion,
correct?........any help from people who are running this setup would be
appreciated.....

this really makes me appreciate the 16 motors alot more, due to their
improvement/ease of setting the timing and no need to worry about the
intermediate shaft

also, the hole in the tranny case doesn't have a little metal arrow in the
casting that i am used to seeing on other 020 cases......

i've been using the bentley, but since this is a hybrid, i just want to see
if there are any corrections i need to compensate for....
