Re: Paint help for the DIY'er, GOOD TIPS!

 I can't give you any specifics as far as what supplies to buy or what
book to look at, but I can give you some advice that I used when doing
my car.  I decided to email this to the list as its good advice for
anyone who might be doing something similar.

 First and foremost, if you take it down to bare metal, make sure to
clean the surface with wax & grease remover when you are done (if you
aren't already doing so), otherwise you may get some surface rust that
will come back to bite you in the butt a few months/years down the road.
So, if you have any bare areas, resand them and clean em up when you are
done.  In case you are wondering, I used PPG DX 330 Wax & Grease
remover.

 Second, when you are doing bodywork and want to check your work, run
your hand over the spot in question with either a papertowel or a thin
rag.  Doing this will allow you to feel your feathered edges (which you
incidentally shouldn't feel) and it will also tell you if your filler is
too high or too low.  When you are done, it should feel like there was
never a dent there to begin with.

 Third, if you want to verify what your hands tell you about your work,
I recommend wetting down the area with wax and grease remover, and then
looking into the reflection at an angle.  This way you can see what your
final result will be if you have a nice wax job, all without having to
paint it first. ;)  Incidentally, this is also a good way to find minut
dents that you otherwise would see or find with your hands.  I used this
technique A LOT...

 Lastly, make sure that you have good filters on the air lines.  When I
primered my car, it was very humid outside and if it weren't for my
filters (one cheapy orange one and one decent glass filter) I would have
ended up with lots of water in my primer mixture.  Not something you
want.

 I also want to make another note...  All great paint jobs start with
great prep jobs...  something to keep in mind.  If you take the extra
time now, it will pay off later.  Hope that helps y'all!
