wtf!! with my clutch?

ok I leave a store this afternoon..start my car...and I cant get it in
gear..seems like the clutch has crapped out...I jam it in reverse, get out
of my parking spot,
force it out of gear, then jam it into 3rd to limp to my mechanics a few
miles away. about 3 lights later the clutch starts working again.
please explain this..
