There is an easier way.8^)
I just figured this one out a couple of weeks ago, when had to pull the
shifter out of my '87 S16V shell. It was much easier to remove the
shifter complete as an assembly from inside the car. Once you disconnect
the front sleeve/bushing mount, you can remove it through the shifter
hole in the floor,  you have to turn it a certain way, but it works.
