Re: Autox tire suggestions

While scrolling throught digest mode, I saw the thread about autox
tires, and I want to throw in my two cents.

I have run both BFG R1's and Hoosiers on my FSP '78. For a new
driver, go with BFG R1's (only made in 13") or the Kuhmos. They have
good stick and will last a season. They both are forgiving to the
mistakes made by new autoxers.
The Hoosiers have WAY MORE STICK, but have several drawbacks.
1. They are more expensive
2. You will use 2-3 sets per year
3. They flatspot very easily, and can be corded with 1-2 big spins.

So the question is, "what are you priorities?" If you want the
best/fastest tire, buy Hoosier. If you want a good tire that will
last a season, buy BFG R1s or Kuhmos.

As for wheel size, I use a 13X9" steel wheel. Heavy but wide. They
didn't work well with the 215-50?13 BFG R1s. They stretched the
sidewalls too far, giving erratic tire temps. They work awesome with
the 245-45/13 Hoosier bias plys.

The BFG R1s and Kuhmos like about 2 or 2 1/2 degrees of negative
camber and about 1/8 to 1/4 toe out. The Hoosiers only need about 1
1/2 degrees of camber.
