Re: SFBay, CA smog stuff



All cars in California (except AWD) have to be dyno tested for smog.  It has 
been this way since 1998.  The price still depends on the location you go 
to.  In SoCal, smog checks are still around $50.  In the bay area, 
everything costs more, so I guess they could ream you for $100.  My 
suggestion?  If you are going out of the bay area (like to Sac) for any 
reason, take your 16v and get it smogged there.

Smog check time is tune-up time.  I would recommend going to a good VW 
mechanic to get your mixture and timing set right.  A good running 16v will 
have no problem passing the smog check.  Make sure your O2 sensor is 
working, air and fuel filters clean, and spark is in good order and you'll 
be good to go!
