I ran 20W50 up till last Tuesday, I usually run 20W50 most of the year
and 15W40 in the winter, and I haven't had any problems. It was just
below 10 F this morning, and my GTI fired right up.

5W30 has too small of a usable temperature range:~ -22 F to 20 F.

10W30 would be much better:~ -9 F to 64 F.

15W40 is ~ 0 F to 90 F.

20W50 is ~ 10 F to 90 F.

I got these ranges from 1987 VW Scirocco owners manual.

As far as the starter not turning over, if the battery and the cables are
good, that only leaves a marginal starter.

Btw, I used "~" to show around, or equal to.
