feeling in gearshift (or lack thereof)

Hi,

When I started my car (82 8v) this morning, the shifter had very little
feeling in it.  It was very easy to move, seemed light, and almost felt
as though it wasn't connected to anything.  The feeling improved as I
drove and was just fine after a mile or so.

What might have happened?  Is this the beginning of an expensive repair?
