[mk2] 16v brake question

  my recent acquisition of $25 rear disc brakes feel through just
tonight. apparently the guy said that they were drum, not disc. is this
possible? all 16v's i though were four wheel disc. am i mistaken or was
this guy mistaken or (what i'm thinking) could someone have done a 16v
swap (engine unknown) and not done the brakes? just curious.
