The biggest difference is that the syncro system is a frontwheel drive system with backwheel assist if front wheels slip, versus the quattro system that is 50/50 drive all the time.

The syncro system isn't good for soo much more than 200 hp, and even below they brake. This is because it's designed to be in work for short moment when your front is spinning, and having a powerful motor or driving a day on a snowfield kills it ( a friend with a vr6 syncro golf has done it).
VW had plans of using this system in rally but gave up because it broke all the time.

The quattro system is from the beginning a 4wd system that VW had in it's Iltis (a pickup for the German army I belive). The Audi motorsport made test and got the boards approval and did the quattro coupe and made all parts of the car as special euqipment so they could have driveshaft in carbon fiber, windows in lexan etc. This is where the Audi quattro story begins.
The system can handle hp off over 500horses, altough the gearbox needs too be changed.

Any one interested in a write-up of Audis incredible tour in gravel and tarmac? Including the very limitied numbers of sport quattros, 90 IMSA GTO that succeded in making the americans change the rules too domestic cars only?
Email me privatly in that case.
