dual downpipe

Hi All:
Just installed a tt downpipe and exhaust I got for $50 off of a wrecked
GTI. Sure wakes up the old beast and it finally sounds as healthy as
the rest of the cars in my garage. Really like that raspy sound above
4000 too. My problem is that I am facing emission testing for the first
time in 6 months and they do a visual inspection for a cat converter. I
really don't want to ditch the downpipe for a tt cat downpipe so I was
thinking of installing a cat right behind the downpipe after the shift
box. Physically there is enough room and this would let me pass the
visual test. I'm not so concerned about the effectiveness of the cat so
far back from the engine. My friend with an 84 Rabbit installed a built
2.0L 8-valve last year and passed emissions with flying colours not soon
after. this was with g-grind, 10:1 comp, and porting. So I figure that
my 'roc should pass easily as well. What are your experiences with this
and do you have any suggestions? Any help is appreciated.
