[mk2] carpet questions

  i recently tore up the carpet in the backseat area to try and find
whre my leak is coming (apparently further forward). at any rate, when i
was pulling i out i noticied there was some really sticky, black,
tar-like substance holding it down. does anyone know what this is? also,
i'm looking into getting new carpet for the car and was just wondering
what everyone's experiences have been. thanx.
