It is a pretty simple problem that really ends up killing the VW
automatics.  If you are aware of it and take the time to fix it, a VW
automatic can be quite reliable, slow, but reliable :-).  On the older
autos the seal between the case and the diff would go bad.  The diff takes
a different fluid than ATF, and if ATF mixes in with the diff fluid,
things stop being lubricated right.  If it stays this way for a long time,
say goodbye to the trans.
