On a related note, I want to get rid of my power steering in my 88 16v.  The rack leaks, and it's not
 worth it to me to fix it.  I'd like to get a non-PS rack.  Can I take out my pump without complications,
 or does another vital component run off the same belt (water pump, etc.)?

 Peter, if it turns out that I don't need to keep the pump as a dead pulley, I'd be more than willing to
 trade you the pump (and related parts) for the rack.  It sounds like you already have a decent rack
 lined up.

I have the PS rack from my '87 16V Scirocco, it is in good shape except
for a torn boot, with the 2 lines attached, $75 plus $10 shipping.
