Solid lifter engines need valve adjustments to remain healthy. 

Get one (I'm due myself) and take it from there. After you warm up, do
you still get smoke? 

Remember that it's cold out and there is a lot of moisture in exhaust.
Does this car get up to a good run often or only sometimes? You might
have a great deal of condensation the gas/oil. Take it out (after
getting the noise checked) and run it at speed long enough to get the
oil up 100c or more. Need to boil off the water.
