before I go screwing around with stuff, the car idles very high (3000 RPM).
The girl who owned it, stopped driving it when it started the high idle,
she told me that it's the timing that's off.

I know there is an idle adjustment on the back of the throttle body, but is
there any other quick adjustment I can do when I pick up the car so It's
not idling so high when I drive it home (20 min drive)?  should I try
playing with the mixture?  the car has no cat, so I won't screw that up.

I wouldn't screw with the mixture, but check the kickdown cable on the trans
to make sure it isn't stuck. Of course, see if the idle screw will fix
things...when the o-ring goes bad they can back out.
