You have no choice but to set it to the factory setting. (Since thats
what the smog tech should be looking for. its one of his questions on the
test.) it will smog better there anyways. I accidentally set mine to 12
degrees advance and smogged the car. (With no cat too, oops.) It failed
and the smog tech said it was for the timming being off. He reset the
timming and it passed. (Still with no cat. Oops. Shhhhh!) Ive had bad
cats fail my car from smog. Sometimes a bad cat is worse than no cat.
(Who could expect a 14 year old cat to still work like new? Especially
since the industry only expects 5 years max life out of them.)

The rule of thumb is a fresh tune up (Which would include the timming)
should always be done before a smog test. if the engine and related
components are in proper working order, it will pass smog. However,
depending on where you take it, I try to keep the cat hot so when they
put it on the testing dyno it's up to its operating temp and working
correctly. A good drive before (10-20 minutes should do it easily) you
test helps and minimizing the down time at the test facility helps too.
