John, I take it your electrical plug was disconnected from the cluster?
You have to have this connected for the alt to start charging.  The
"excite" (the blue wire that you hook to the alt next to the main
power) wire requires the alternator light in the cluster to be there to
complete the circuit...if it isn't there, no charge from the alt....
